Understanding your IP address

Everything you need to know about what your IP address is, how to find it, and why it matters — without the jargon.

What is an IP address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number assigned to your device so it can send and receive data online. Your public IP address is the one your Internet Service Provider (ISP) gives your connection — it is what every website you visit sees. That is the address ipnow shows at the top of this page.

How do I find my IP address?

The easiest way to find your IP address is to open ipnow.dev — your public IPv4 and IPv6 address appear instantly, with no app or sign-up. If you need your private (local) IP, check your device network settings: on Windows run "ipconfig", and on macOS or Linux run "ifconfig" or "ip addr".

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 is the original 32-bit format written as four numbers (for example 99.33.79.49). IPv6 is the newer 128-bit format written in hexadecimal groups, created because the world ran out of IPv4 addresses. Many modern connections have both — ipnow detects and displays each one separately.

Why does my IP address change?

Most home connections use a dynamic IP address, so your ISP can reassign it when you restart your router, reconnect, or move networks. Mobile devices change IP even more often as they switch between cell towers and Wi-Fi. A static IP stays the same but usually costs extra.

Is it safe to share your IP address?

An IP address is a normal part of how the internet works. Here is what it does — and does not — reveal about you.

What your IP reveals

Your public IP can expose your approximate location (city and region) and your ISP — but not your name, precise address, or browsing history.

We never log it

ipnow shows no ads and runs no trackers, and we never store or log your IP address on our servers. Your location and ISP are looked up through privacy-respecting third-party providers.

Staying private

To mask your IP address you can use a trusted VPN or the Tor network. That routes your traffic through another server so sites see a different IP.
