Why your IP has a country

IP address blocks are allocated to organizations by regional internet registries (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC), each covering a part of the world. GeoIP databases record which country each block is registered in, so your IP can be mapped to a country with high accuracy.

Country-level IP geolocation is highly accurate — usually over 99%. City-level accuracy is much lower, because an IP block registered nationally may not reflect your exact city. So while your country is almost always right, the city shown can be off.
