IP addresses and online gaming

Why your public IP matters for gaming, how NAT types work, and what to do when your gaming IP keeps changing.

Why gaming needs your public IP

Game servers and peer-to-peer connections use your public IP to route game data to your console or PC. When hosting a dedicated server, friends need your public IP (shown above) plus the relevant game port to connect.

NAT types explained

Your router translates your public IP into local IPs for each device — this is NAT. Open NAT lets you connect to anyone freely. Moderate NAT has some restrictions. Strict NAT blocks many peer-to-peer connections and can cause matchmaking issues. Port forwarding on your router usually fixes Strict NAT.

Dynamic IPs and game servers

Home connections use dynamic IPs that can change when your router restarts. If you host a game server long-term, friends' saved IP becomes outdated after a change. Use a free dynamic DNS service (like No-IP or Duck DNS) so your server always has the same hostname.

VPNs and gaming

A gaming VPN can reduce ping to specific servers, bypass geo-restrictions, or protect against IP-targeted DDoS attacks. However, VPNs add some latency. Your IP shown on ipnow changes when connected to a VPN — which is also the IP your game traffic goes through.

Should you share your gaming IP address?

Sharing your public IP for gaming is often necessary, but there are risks worth knowing.

When other players see your IP

In modern games with dedicated servers, your IP is hidden behind the server — other players never see it. In older peer-to-peer games or direct-connect scenarios, your IP may be visible. Check your game's connection type before sharing.

We never log it

ipnow shows no ads and runs no trackers. We never store or log your IP address on our servers. Geolocation and ISP details are fetched from privacy-respecting third-party providers.

Protecting your gaming IP

If your gaming IP is exposed or targeted, request a new IP from your ISP or use a gaming VPN to change it. Enabling Strict NAT via router settings also limits P2P exposure, at the cost of some matchmaking flexibility.
