IP addresses and Nintendo Switch

How NAT types work on Switch, which ports to open, and how to improve your online connection.

Switch and your public IP

Your Nintendo Switch connects to online games via your public IP (shown above). Nintendo rates NAT from Type A (best) to Type F (worst). Type A or B provides smooth online play; Type D or worse can cause connection and matchmaking problems in games like Splatoon and Smash Bros.

Improving your Switch NAT type

Enable UPnP in your router for automatic port handling. For manual setup, the Switch uses UDP ports 45000–65535 for online play — some routers let you forward this range to your Switch's local IP. Setting DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 can also help connectivity.

Set a static local IP for your Switch

For reliable port forwarding, assign your Switch a static local IP: System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings → your network → Change Settings → IP Address Settings → Manual. Or configure a DHCP reservation on your router.

Wired play with a LAN adapter

The Switch supports wired Ethernet via a USB LAN adapter (or the dock's LAN port on OLED models). A wired connection is more stable than Wi-Fi for online play and improves NAT reliability. The public IP is the same either way.

What Nintendo's servers see and how to keep your connection healthy.

What Nintendo's servers see

Nintendo Switch Online sees your public IP for matchmaking and region. Most online play is coordinated through Nintendo's servers, so your IP is generally not directly exposed to other players.

We never log it

ipnow shows no ads and runs no trackers. We never store or log your IP address on our servers. Geolocation and ISP details are fetched from privacy-respecting third-party providers.

Improving connection stability

A better NAT type reduces disconnects and matchmaking issues. Use UPnP or port forwarding, a wired LAN adapter, and a fast public DNS. The Switch does not support VPNs directly, but a router-level VPN would route its traffic if needed.
