IP addresses and PS4 gaming

How NAT types work on PS4, which ports to forward, and how to get NAT Type 2 for the best online experience.

PS4 and your public IP

Your PS4 connects to PlayStation Network via your public IP (shown above). NAT Type 2 (moderate) is the recommended setting and supports all online features. NAT Type 3 (strict) can cause party chat problems and matchmaking failures. NAT Type 1 (open) is rare and requires a direct connection.

Getting NAT Type 2 on PS4

Forward these ports to your PS4's local IP: TCP 80, 443, 1935, 3478, 3479, 3480 and UDP 3478, 3479. Enable UPnP in your router for automatic setup. Check the result at PS4: Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection.

Set a static local IP for your PS4

Port forwarding rules point at your PS4's local IP, which DHCP can change. Set a static local IP on PS4: Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection → Custom → IP Address Settings → Manual, or configure a DHCP reservation on your router.

Wired vs wireless for PS4

A wired Ethernet connection gives lower latency and steadier speeds than Wi-Fi for PS4 gaming and downloads. Both use the same public IP — the difference is connection stability, not the address itself.

PS4 gaming and your IP address

What PSN and other players can see, and how to protect your connection.

What PlayStation Network sees

PSN sees your public IP for matchmaking and services. In most games, player traffic is relayed through Sony's servers, so your IP is not directly shared with other players.

We never log it

ipnow shows no ads and runs no trackers. We never store or log your IP address on our servers. Geolocation and ISP details are fetched from privacy-respecting third-party providers.

Protecting your PS4 connection

If targeted by DDoS attacks, request a new IP from your ISP or route your PS4 through a VPN-capable router. NAT Type 3 also blocks incoming P2P connections at the cost of some features.
