IP addresses and Xbox gaming

How NAT types work on Xbox, which ports to forward, and how to get the best online gaming experience.

Xbox and your public IP

Your Xbox connects to Xbox Live and multiplayer games through your public IP address (shown above). Your NAT type determines how freely your Xbox can communicate with other players. Open NAT provides the best experience; Strict NAT can cause party chat issues and prevent some matchmaking.

Getting Open NAT on Xbox

For Open NAT, forward these ports to your Xbox's local IP in your router: UDP 88, UDP 500, UDP 3074, UDP 3544, UDP 4500, TCP 3074. Also enable UPnP in your router for automatic port negotiation. Check NAT type at Xbox Settings → General → Network settings → Test NAT type.

Static local IP for your Xbox

Port forwarding rules use your Xbox's local IP. If your router reassigns that IP, the rules break. Fix this: note the current local IP in Xbox network settings, then configure a DHCP reservation in your router so the Xbox always gets the same local IP.

Wired vs wireless for Xbox

A wired Ethernet connection delivers more stable latency and better download speeds than Wi-Fi for Xbox gaming. Both share the same public IP — the difference is connection quality, not the IP address itself.

Xbox gaming and your IP address

What Xbox Live and other players can see, and how to protect your connection.

What Xbox Live sees

Xbox Live sees your public IP address and uses it for regional matchmaking and service delivery. In most party and game sessions, your IP is not shared with other players — traffic is relayed through Microsoft servers.

We never log it

ipnow shows no ads and runs no trackers. We never store or log your IP address on our servers. Geolocation and ISP details are fetched from privacy-respecting third-party providers.

Protecting your Xbox connection

If you are targeted by DDoS attacks during gaming, contact your ISP to request a new public IP, or use a VPN router to hide your real IP. Strict NAT also limits direct P2P connections that could expose your IP.
