Understanding your Chromebook IP address

How IP addresses work on ChromeOS, and how to find both your public and local IP on a Chromebook.

Your Chromebook has two IP addresses

Your Chromebook has a public IP (shown above), shared by all devices on your network and assigned by your ISP. It also has a local IP (e.g. 192.168.x.x) used only inside your home network. The public IP is what every website you visit can see.

How to find your local IP on ChromeOS

Click the clock/status area (bottom-right) → click the Wi-Fi network name → click the (ⓘ) or network name again → open the Network tab. Your IP Address field shows your local IP. Alternatively, go to Settings → Network → your Wi-Fi → look for IP Address.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 is the original 32-bit format written as four numbers (e.g. 99.33.79.49). IPv6 is the newer 128-bit format created because IPv4 addresses ran out globally. Many connections support both — ipnow detects and displays each separately.

Why your IP address changes

Most home and mobile connections use dynamic IP addresses that your ISP can reassign at any time — typically when you restart your router, reconnect, or switch networks. A static IP stays fixed but usually costs extra from your ISP.

Is it safe to share your Chromebook's IP address?

Every website your Chromebook visits can see your public IP. Here is what that reveals and your privacy options.

What your Chromebook IP reveals

Your public IP can expose your approximate city, region, and ISP — not your name or exact address. Any website or service you connect to on ChromeOS can log this public IP.

We never log it

ipnow shows no ads and runs no trackers. We never store or log your IP address on our servers. Geolocation and ISP details are fetched from privacy-respecting third-party providers.

Staying private on ChromeOS

Chrome's Incognito mode does not change your IP. To mask it, install a reputable VPN app from Google Play (available on most modern Chromebooks) or a Chrome VPN extension, or configure a VPN in ChromeOS network settings.
