Understanding your Mac IP address

Public and local IP addresses on macOS, how to find them both, and why your IP sometimes changes.

Your Mac has two IP addresses

Your Mac has a public IP (shown above) shared by all devices on your network, assigned by your ISP. It also has a local IP visible only inside your home network. Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections each get their own local IP, though they share the same public IP.

How to find your IP on Mac

Your public IP is shown at the top of this page. For your local IP on macOS: open System Settings → Network → select your connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) → click Details. In Terminal, run `ipconfig getifaddr en0` (Wi-Fi) or `ipconfig getifaddr en1` (Ethernet).

Wi-Fi vs Ethernet on Mac

Wi-Fi and Ethernet share the same public IP but have separate local IPs (e.g. 192.168.1.10 for Wi-Fi, 192.168.1.11 for Ethernet). The public IP — what ipnow shows — is the same regardless of which interface your Mac uses.

Why your IP address changes

Most home and mobile connections use dynamic IP addresses that your ISP can reassign at any time — typically when you restart your router, reconnect, or switch networks. A static IP stays fixed but usually costs extra from your ISP.

Is it safe to share your Mac's IP address?

Every website you visit on your Mac can see your public IP. Here is what that means and how to protect your privacy on macOS.

What your Mac IP reveals

Your public IP can expose your approximate city, region, and ISP. It does not reveal your name, street address, or browsing history. Websites, servers, and online services all see this IP when you connect from your Mac.

We never log it

ipnow shows no ads and runs no trackers. We never store or log your IP address on our servers. Geolocation and ISP details are fetched from privacy-respecting third-party providers.

Staying private on macOS

Safari's Private Window does not change your IP. To mask it, use a reputable VPN app on macOS, or sign into iCloud Private Relay (iCloud+ subscribers) which routes Safari traffic through Apple's relay network.
